Collision kernels from velocity-selective optical pumping with magnetic depolarization

چکیده
We experimentally demonstrate how magnetic depolarization of velocity-selective optical pumping can be used to single out the collisional cusp kernel best describing spinand velocity-relaxing collisions between potassium atoms and low-pressure helium. The range of pressures and transverse fields used simulate the optical pumping regime pertinent to sodium guidestars employed in adaptive optics. We measure the precession of spin-velocity modes under the application of transverse magnetic fields, simulating the natural configuration of mesospheric sodium optical pumping in the geomagnetic field. We also provide a full theoretical account of the experimental data using the recently developed cusp kernels, which realistically quantify velocity damping collisions in this optical pumping regime. A single cusp kernel with a sharpness s = 13 ± 2 provides a global fit to the K-He data.

Velocity selective optical pumping
We consider optical pumping with a quasi monochromatic tunable light beam, in the low intensity limit where a rate equation regime is obtained The velocity selective optical pumping (V.S.O.P.) introduces a correlation between atomic velocity and internal variables in the ground (or metastable) state. The aim of this article is to evaluate these atomic observables (orientation, alignment, popula...

Calcium monofluoride (CaF) is magnetically slowed and trapped using optical pumping. Starting from a collisionally cooled slow beam, CaF with an initial velocity of ∼ 30 m/s is slowed via magnetic forces as it enters a 800 mK deep magnetic trap. Employing two-stage optical pumping, CaF is irreversibly loaded into the trap via two scattered photons. We observe a trap lifetime exceeding 500 ms li...

We demonstrate a method of preparation of broadband sign-reversible dispersion in alkali vapour based on velocity-selective optical pumping. The refractive index in Rb vapour has been measured using a heterodyne method. The magnitudes of the normal and anomalous dispersion, which are almost constant over a spectral region of approximately 40 MHz, can lead to a reduced (V(g) approximately c/230)...

The magnetic sublevel specific preparation of the uX Sg 1 ,v51,J51& state of molecular H2 using stimulated Raman pumping with circularly polarized light to saturate the Q01(1) transition is reported. The intensities of S branch rotational Raman scattering signals for the v50 and v51 states combined with their depolarization ratios measured as a function of pumping light polarization provide dir...
متن کاملOne-dimensional laser cooling of an atomic beam in a sealed vapor cell
We describe a simple experiment that demonstrates one-dimensional laser cooling in a sealed vapor cell. A velocity selective optical pumping scheme was first used to define a collimated beam of atoms within the cell. A particular velocity group of atoms was labeled by optical pumping with one laser and detected by absorption with a second laser. Transverse cooling of this velocity group, which ...
